Water is something we take for granted

But that’s not suprising as humans are 60% H2O and 71% of the earth surface is covered with water.   Every day each Briton uses about 150 litres of tap water so for the 60 million UK consumers households and businesses that equates to 17 billion litres of water goes in to the UK mains water supply (1)  Hard to imagine but that’s 6,800 Olympic sized swimming pools each and every day.

Like lots of other businesses and households we have a water meter so when we received our latest water bill we thought how can we save both water and money.  We did some research and these come up from including an informative graphic from South East Water (2)

  1. Take a shower instead of a bath
  2. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth
  3. Wash a full load
  4. Only flush the toilet when you have to
  5. Fix leaking taps
  6. Make your garden water efficient
  7. Don’t leave the water running when you wash dishes
  8. Ditch the hose pipe
  9. Order a water butt
  10. Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need (this will save you energy too)

Exploring number 5 a bit more, a leaking tap can waste 60 litres of water a week.  If you need help fixing this, just give us a call on 0333 323 4580 and we’ll be there to sort it.  Alternatively, for the budding DIYers, Drain Doctor will soon be publishing some YouTube videos on how to fix leaking taps.  Watch this space!
